Why convert JPG to PNG
Every time a JPG is edited and saved again, it loses a little more detail. Converting to PNG stops that: from then on, edits and saves are lossless. Some design tools, templates, and platforms also ask specifically for PNG.
Honest expectations
Converting cannot restore detail that JPG compression already removed, and it does not create a transparent background by itself. The PNG will usually be larger than the original JPG.

Common problems and how to fix them
The PNG is much bigger than the JPG
That is normal for photos. If you only need a lighter file, keep the JPG or convert it to WebP instead.
The background is not transparent
JPG has no transparency, so the PNG keeps the same background. Removing it needs an image editor.
The image still shows JPG artifacts
Converting keeps the image exactly as it is now; it cannot remove artifacts from the original JPG.
