How PNG compression works here
PNG is lossless, so the way to make it lighter is to store fewer distinct colors. The quality slider controls how many color levels are kept: high values look identical to the original, lower values produce smaller files and can show banding in smooth gradients.
When another format is better
For photos saved as PNG, converting to JPG or WebP usually saves far more space than PNG compression. Keep PNG for graphics that need transparency or pixel-perfect edges.
What to expect by type of PNG
PNG compression keeps fewer colors. How much it helps depends on the image:
