When PNG makes sense
PNG is accepted by almost every editor, office program, and design tool, and it does not lose detail when you save it again. Use it when you will edit the photo several times or place it in a document. To simply share a photo, HEIC to JPG gives a much lighter file.
What to expect
The photo is opened at JPG quality 95 and then saved as PNG, so the PNG keeps every pixel from that point on. PNG does not compress photos well: a small 1280 × 854 sample photo became a 2.4 MB PNG, and a full 12-megapixel iPhone photo can be many times larger. Use WebP or JPG when you need something lighter.
Which format for your iPhone photo?
Choose by what you will do with the photo next:
| You want to | Best choice |
|---|---|
| Share it or send it by email | HEIC to JPG |
| Edit it without losing detail | PNG |
| Put it on a website | HEIC to WebP |
| Make a document from it | HEIC to PDF |
| Keep the smallest file on your phone | Keep the HEIC |
Common problems and how to fix them
The PNG is huge
That is normal for photos. Convert to WebP or JPG for a lighter file, or continue to Compress to reduce the colors.
I need a transparent background
Photos have none. Removing a background needs an image editor; save the cut-out as PNG there.
My photo will not load
Files up to 25 MB are accepted. If a photo cannot be read it may be damaged: try another copy of it.
🔗 Keep going without uploading again
PNG files too heavy? Continue to Compress to reduce the colors, or convert to WebP for a much lighter file, without adding the photos again.
